Wine Competition Rules
1. To qualify for entry in the San Joaquin Valley Wine Competition 2009 you must represent a commercial winery or private-label produced by a commercial or professional winemaker.
2. A wine’s category will be based upon the varietal composition and other information supplied by the producer.
3. All awards will be awarded by the judges. The judges’ decisions will be final.
4. San Joaquin Valley Wine Competition 2009 reserves the right to create or delete categories if the number of entries so warrants. Wine Competition 2009 also reserves the right to assign entries to particular categories.
5. Wines submitted for which there is no existing category will be entered in the appropriate category.
6. The same wine may not be entered in more than one category. Wineries may, however, submit multiple entries in the same category.
7. An official entry consists of eight 375ml bottles, four 750ml bottles, or four 1.5 liter bottles of the same wine.
8. All entries must be received by June 19, 2009. Wines received after this date may not be eligible for the Competition.
9. Entry fees are not refundable, nor transferable.
10. All wine entries become property of the San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers Association.
11. Wineries of winning wines are asked to supply wines to the Competition at wholesale price for use in showcasing these wines at the Fresno County Fair Wine Pavilion. Wholesale case prices are to be listed on the entry form.
How to Enter
The entry form (on the back) must be filled out completely and mailed to: San Joaquin Valley Wine Competition 2009. There is a $50.00 entry fee per entry. Deadline for entry is June 19, 2009. There are no restrictions on the number of wines a winery may enter. Experimental wines are permitted. Additional entry forms can be found at www.idrinkwine.net
Where to Ship the Wines
Wines will be shipped to San Joaquin Valley Wine Competition 2009, 1625 Simpson St., Kingsburg, Calif., 93631 - ATTN: Matt. Wines will be stored in a secure, temperature-controlled facility until the Competition.
Medals and Awards
The judges will award all medals and awards. Wines in each category will be considered for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Gold-Medal winning wines will also be eligible for Best of Show White, Best of Show Red, Best of Show Dessert, and the Best of Show Award. The decision of the judges will be final. Winning wines will be released to the media and public within two weeks of the Competition.
Judges & Judging
The judging panels will be composed of wine professionals: winemakers, professors, restaurateurs, journalists, members of the trade, and serious wine collectors. At least 90% of the judging panel will have had extensive professional judging expertise. All wines will be tasted blind. An updated list of judges may be found at www.idrinkwine.net
Judging Notes
For $6 per entry, we will confidentially collate and copy the judges’ notes for your wine so that you can see what exactly transpired with the tasting of your wine.
Packaging Judging Rules
1. Any commercial wine is eligible for entry into the San Joaquin Valley Wine Competition Packaging Judging.
2. An entry consists of one example bottle of wine. If the same wine is entered into the Wine Competition proper, one of the bottles from that entry will be used as the entry for the Package Judging.
3. Awards will be given in the following categories:
A. Best Package B. Most Creative Package
C. Most Artistic Package D. Cleanest Package
E. Best Use of Closures F. People’s Choice
G. Most Easily Understood H. Best Back Label Description
4. The Judging will take place the day after the Wine Competition, June 27, 2009 at a local art exhibition space. The Judging will be in conjunction with an event to choose the signature artwork for a large wine tasting in the Fall.
5. The Package Judging Panel will consist of artists, museum curators, art collectors, advertisers, and media representatives. The People’s Choice award will be voted upon by attendees to the exhibit. All other awards will be subjective and done by consensus by the Judging Panel.
6. The Judging Panel may take the following into account: The Label, the Back Label, the Cork, the Capsule, or any other bottle decoration, including Neck Tags. In regards to this Judging, decorative bags and boxes are not considered part of the wine package.
How To Enter
Please mark the appropriate box on the Wine Competition Entry Form. There is a $20 entry fee per wine for the Package Judging. Please ship the wines to the same address as the Wine Competition, by the same due date, June 19, 2009, and make the check out to the San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers Association.
